When my family moved back to Australia, we packed our kitchen equipment and prepared it for the trip home. With covid shipping delays, it would take five months to arrive. Ouch.
There were specific things I remember missing kitchen tools that I'd taken for granted as just being there. We made do by borrowing some things and re-purchasing others, but it got me thinking that these kitchen tools are good to have on hand for complete kitchen and cooking efficiency.
Let's go kitchen tool shopping at Robins Kitchen!
1. Kitchen Knife Set
A good set of kitchen knives can make all the difference when cooking. Whether you need to cut vegetables, slice meat or chop herbs, a good set of kitchen knives can save you time, energy and money.
Knowing what to look for in a good set of kitchen knives is important before buying one. There are many different types of knives, each with a different purpose.
Ask yourself what you will use your knives for before deciding which type you need. Also, think about the size of your hands, whether left or right-handed, when deciding on the best blades.
Some of the most common types of knives include chef's knives, paring knives, carving knives, and bread knives.

2. Cutting Boards
If you're using sharp knives cutting boards are a kitchen essential. They help to protect your countertops from knife damage and make cleaning up easier.
Chopping boards come in different materials, sizes, shapes, and styles, so it is good to know what cutting board will work best for you. I tend to like having a couple of different chopping boards. A solid wooden multi-purpose chopping board comes in handy for daily food prep. I like this to be a heavy rectangular board so that it doesn't move around too much.
Chopping boards with a channel around the edge is excellent for cutting juicy foods like meat, so the juice doesn't run all over the bench. I also have a couple of thin silicone colour-coded chopping boards for foods I don't want to prepare on the regular board, like chicken, which can cross-contaminate other foods.

3. Mixing Bowls
The best thing about mixing bowls is using them to mix or serve. They are also great for storing ingredients and leftovers in the refrigerator. I like to have a few different-sized bowls on hand, and I have a variety of plastic bowls, glass and metal bowls. If you have a bowl set, they can be easier and more compact to store away.

I noticed not having a complete set of utensils when we first moved. A utensil set is a must-have in any kitchen. It consists of a spatula, tongs, large serving spoon and other kitchen essentials needed for cooking and serving. I have a variety of utensils made from a mix of wood, plastic, metal and silicone. Silicone utensils are an excellent choice if you're looking for an alternative to metal or plastic utensils. They're gentle on non-stick surfaces, resistant to heat and don't react with food, so they're safe to use in the kitchen. I like these Scullery Kolori Silicone range and have the tongs in my kitchen.

5. Measuring Cups and Spoons
Measuring cups and spoons measure dry ingredients like sugar, flour, and salt, or wet ingredients like oil or water.
Feel free to correct me here. But, I'd be inclined to suggest that measuring cups and spoons are essential if you're into baking. Baking is so precise; if you get measurements wrong, it can significantly affect the outcome. But, if you're not a baker, you could get away with using regular cups and spoons-just saying.
I have 2 sets of measuring cups and spoons floating about my kitchen (one often goes missing) and use them for my regular cooking. But I don't get too hung up if I don't use them. For baking, that's a different story.
